Industrial hygienists are the backbone of too many industries to count, and their inquisitive ways of thinking stand out when it comes to chemical detection. Check out the big topics coming from our customers in industrial hygiene right now in our post below and see what’s happening in industrial hygiene chemical monitoring.

Which chemicals currently need an easy-to-use, reliable, and low-cost detection solution?

Based on our recent conversations, we’ve seen an uptick in interest in Mercury, Formaldehyde, and TDI/MDI. We had to ask ourselves, why these chemicals?

Mercury Detection

Mercury is seen in countless industries and can be found on many job sites. The concern for mercury exposure in refineries and petroleum processing has always been top of mind, but current solutions for daily monitoring are not always affordable or easily accessible. OSHA’s PEL (permissible exposure limit) in general industry for mercury is 0.1 mg/10 m³ (TWA). NIOSH’s REL (recommended exposure limit) for mercury is 0.05 mg/m³ (TWA).

Our Solution: The Morphix Technologies’ SafeAir Mercury Chemical Detection Badge and ChromAir Mercury Chemical Detection Badge were designed to fill the need for mercury vapor detection in the industry.

  • SafeAir Mercury Exposure level: 0.25 mg/m³∙hr and 0.08 mg/m³∙hr
  • ChromAir Mercury Exposure Dose Range: 0.125 – 1.6 mg/m³∙hr

Formaldehyde Detection

Formaldehyde has been a building block in many industries, including furniture making, resin formulating, and many others throughout the years. Its known carcinogenic properties have made users more aware and wary of exposure. OSHA’s PEL (permissible exposure limit) for formaldehyde is 0.75 ppm (TWA). NIOSH’s REL (recommended exposure limit) is 0.016 ppm (TWA).

Our Solution: Morphix’s SafeAir Formaldehyde Chemical Detection Badges and ChromAir Formaldehyde Chemical Detection Badge were developed with end-users in mind. They give the wearer a simple solution for monitoring in the workplace, with practical detection levels to keep badge users not only in compliance with TWA and STEL but also safe.

  • SafeAir Formaldehyde Exposure Level: 0.2 ppm∙hr
  • ChromAir Formaldehyde Exposure Dose Range: 0.3 – 12 ppm∙hr

TDI/MDI

Toluene Diisocyanate (TDI) and Methylene Diphenyl Diisocyanate (MDI) are aromatic isocyanates that span industries both large and small. Top foam producers (e.g., mattress manufacturers) and coating specialists (e.g., big-name car manufacturers) use TDI and MDI daily. Thousands of roofers and spray foam insulators also use these chemicals in their day-to-day operations. The gap for affordable and easy-to-use detection of these chemicals is significant across various operations. OSHA and NIOSH’s exposure limit for TDI is 0.02 ppm (TWA). OSHA’s exposure limit for MDI is 0.02 ppm (ceiling), and NIOSH’s exposure limit for MDI is 0.005 ppm (TWA).

Our Solution: The Morphix SafeAir TDI/MDI Chemical Detection Badge is a monitoring system designed to indicate the presence of TDI and/or MDI at concentrations below the permissible exposure limit. Whether at a large plant or simply ensuring that your family of employees is well monitored on-site, SafeAir badges are designed to be an added layer to your safety system.

  • SafeAir TDI/MDI Exposure Level: 5 ppb∙hr
  • SafeAir TDI/MDI Exposure Dose Range (when used with color comparator): 5 – 140 ppb∙hr

What are some of the most important needs for the detection of these chemicals and more?

Accuracy One of the big questions we get asked is, “Can our badges be used for compliance sampling relative to 8-hour TWA, STEL, and Ceiling limits?”. Our response: Yes! All of our products have ± 25% accuracy at the 95% confidence level. We determine this by following NIOSH protocol.

Ease-of-Use/Training Capability We understand that not everyone has the same type of training. Each working environment is different, every person has their own skill sets, and no two people have the exact same experience. With that in mind, Morphix Technologies’ SafeAir and ChromAir badges are an easy-to-use option that requires very little training. Our goal is to put safety into your hands every time.

Accessibility Safety speaks to everyone. What’s better than knowing you’re doing your best to keep yourself, your team, and your surroundings safe? Knowing that your safety solution isn’t going anywhere and you can rely on having your toolkit stocked. At Morphix, we develop, manufacture, and ship all of our products from under one roof. Most of our orders ship within 24 hours, and we have a team ready to talk you through your specific needs and concerns for your next job. Our worldwide network of distributors is ready to take on international and domestic customers, and we offer direct purchasing in the US through our Morphix Amazon Storefront with 2nd-day shipping. It’s reliability you can count on to keep your team safe every day of the week.
